すでに実行済みかもしれませんが、上記メッセージから判断すると
fontconfigを導入後に、以下のメッセージでているrootでfc-cacheは
実行しているでしょうか?

  % pkg_info -D fontconfig 
  Information for fontconfig-2.2.1:
  
  Install notice:
  ===========================================================================

  You will need to run 'fc-cache' as root to build the X11
